Fairy under the moonlight / 2013 / Helsinki
Epiphyllum. We name this flower 'fairy under the moonlight' as it only bloom during night time. Since its blooming period only last couple of hours, we also has the term in Chinese '昙花一现' - 'the flash moment of the blooming epiphyllum' to describe something that is written in water.
Below is an epiphyllum blooming in my mom’s garden. It gave a show quietly in the heavy rain.
It reminds me of the moment when my mom shared with me her first blooming epiphyllum. She was excited but also sad that I am not able to experience it with her as I was living far away from her. To acknowledge that, I made a surface pattern for her.
